Resumen

  • Introduction: Population aging demands educational and community responses in which Physical Education, through Service-Learning, connects curriculum, critical reflection, and ethical commitment to transform realities with older adults. Objective: This study examines the effect of planned intervention duration (6–8 sessions) on Physical Education Teacher Education students’ perceptions of pedagogical value, professional development, competencies, and overall appraisal at a Chilean public university. Methodology: A mixed-methods, cross-sectional, descriptive–correlational design was employed with 41 students; a validated Service-Learning scale for physical activity and sport was administered, and a focus group explored professional and life-learning outcomes. Results: Instrument reliability was excellent (α = .97), and the subgroup that completed eight sessions scored higher than the six-session subgroup on pedagogical value (p = .047; r ≈ .30), professional competencies (p = .007; r ≈ .41), opinion (p = .014; r ≈ .38), and the total score (p = .033; r ≈ .33), with no differences by sex, prior Service-Learning experience, or prior contact with beneficiaries. Qualitative analysis highlighted professional learning (disciplinary knowledge; session design and delivery) and life learning (autonomy, social responsibility, and self-confidence). Conclusion: Overall, a longer duration within the planned range—particularly completing eight sessions—is associated with more favorable formative perceptions; future studies should incorporate pre–post measurements, comparison groups, and assessment of social impact to strengthen inference and curricular transferability.
